Understanding the Importance:

Adding a package in Dukaan is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended to avoid potential issues related to weight disputes with courier partners or Dukaan Delivery.

Understanding the difference between Shipment weight and Product weight is essential.

  • Product weight: It is the dead weight of your item.

  • Shipment weight: It represents the volumetric weight of your entire shipment, accounting for multiple products in a single order.

Example Scenario:

Consider selling T-shirts where a customer orders one black and one white T-shirt, each weighing 300 grams. Since the order contains two items, the total product weight is 600 grams. To accurately represent this, you should assign a package to the shipment based on your box sizes. Based on the package dimension the system will automatically calculate the volumetric weight of the package.

Volumetric Weight Calculation:

  • Using a box size of 30x30x30 cm, the volumetric weight is calculated differently by various courier companies.

    • UPS: 5.4 kg

    • FedEx: 5.4 kg

    • DHL Express: 5.4 kg

    • DPD: 5.4 kg

    • BlueDart Air: 6.75 kg

The formula for volumetric weight calculation is 30x30x30/denominator, where BlueDart uses 4000 as the denominator, and others use 5000.

Delivery fee calculation:

  1. Volumetric Weight Higher than Product Weight:

    • If you ship two items with a combined weight of only 600 grams, but the volumetric weight calculated for the package is 6.75 kg, you will be billed for the higher volumetric weight instead of the actual product weight.

  2. Product Weight Higher than Volumetric Weight:

    • Conversely, if each product weighs 5 kg, making the total product weight 10 kg, and the volumetric weight of the package used is 6.75 kg, you will be billed for the higher product weight of 10 kg instead of the volumetric weight.

Avoiding Weight Discrepancies:

  • Neglecting to add packages can lead to unexpected charges.

  • For example, if you specify a product weight of 300 grams for a T-shirt and use an undisclosed large package, you initially pay only for the 300 grams.

  • However, when the shipment reaches delivery company warehouses, they compare volumetric weight with the declared package and product weight.

  • This scrutiny can result in a weight discrepancy dispute charge for extra kilograms in your Dukaan Delivery, Shiprocket, and Courier Partner accounts.

In conclusion, adding packages in Dukaan significantly contributes to accurate weight calculations, reduces the risk of chargebacks, and ensures a smooth and cost-effective shipping process. Take proactive steps to add packages in your Dukaan settings and enhance your overall e-commerce efficiency.
